Cody Overton Captures $2,500 Red Clay 602 Late Model Series Victory in Winter Freeze Finale

Ryan Delph

After a part failure took him out of contention for the $25,000 top prize in the Super Late Model portion of the ‘Winter Freeze XVI’ finale on Saturday night at Screven Motor Speedway, World of Outlaws Late Model Series ace Cody Overton got a bit of redemption by taking the checkered flag first in the Schaeffer’s Oil by Mike Bruner Red Clay 602 Late Model Series main event!  Cody clicked off the quickest times during both MRP Fantasy Racing hot laps and Knowles Race Parts and Bodies qualifying prior to starting the 25-lap feature from the outside of the front row.  The Evans, Georgia ace then made a late bid for the race lead, powered past race-long leader Ches Chester on lap 23, and led the final three circuits to capture the $2,500 first place money.

Cody came out on top of a great race to win by 0.642 of a second over polesitter Ches Chester, who paced the stout 602 Late Model field for the first 22 laps.  Friday night’s $2,000 victor Wyatt Coffey rounded out the podium in the third spot.  Trent Ivey started and finished fourth, while Cameron Tribble passed a trio of competitors to nab the final position inside of the top five.

“Lil Sexy” Cody Overton drove a #84 machine - normally driven by Brian Grumbles - with sponsorship in part from Excel Racing Chassis, Holder’s Body Works, and Fox Racing Shox.  The win for Overton on Saturday came after a solid fourth place performance in Friday’s weekend lid lifter.  He earned Hard Charger honors in passing eight racecars during the 20-lap opener en route to the top five showing.

A total of 29 Schaeffer’s Oil by Mike Bruner Red Clay 602 Late Model Series competitors were on hand at the Sylvania, Georgia facility on Saturday for the final event of the ‘Winter Freeze XVI’ weekend.  Cody Overton topped both MRP Fantasy Racing hot laps and Knowles Race Parts and Bodies qualifying with his fast times of 17.231 and 16.225 respectively.  After the top eight qualifiers were locked in through each group during time trials, Griffin Jones secured the victory in the lone consolation race of the evening.  Only two Tuxedo Glass & Mirror caution flags slowed the action during the A-Main - none of which were for serious incidents.

Following the pair of non-point races at Screven Motor Speedway, the points portion of the Red Clay 602 Late Model Series schedule will heat up on Saturday, February 28 at Senoia Raceway in Senoia, Georgia.  A $2,500 winner’s check will be up for grabs in three weeks at the Peach State venue.  Kenny Collins won last year’s points opener at Senoia by besting a solid 28-car field.  More information can be found online at both www.redclayseries.com and www.senoiaraceway1969.com.
