David Smith Wires Red Clay 602 Late Model Series Event at Wythe Raceway for $2,000 Win
Ryan DelphIn the inaugural visit by the Schaeffer's Oil by Mike Bruner Red Clay 602 Late Model Series to the picturesque Wythe Raceway on Saturday evening, April 26, it was David Smith emerging victorious to capture his first series victory of the 2025 campaign! The Inman, South Carolina ace topped the speed chart in Knowles Race Parts and Bodies, LLC qualifying to earn the pole position for the 25-lap headliner. David then got the holeshot at the drop of the green flag and he never looked back en route to recording the $2,000 triumph.
Finishing behind Smith’s #71 machine at the unfurling of the checkered flag was runner-up Daniel Durham, who started in the second spot. Red Clay 602 Late Model Series point leader Dawson Lowe rounded out the podium in third. Kenny Peeples, Jr. started and finished fourth, while Wyatt Coffey moved up inside of the top five to nab a fifth place performance.
The event last Saturday night in Rural Retreat, Virginia marked the seventh Schaeffer’s Oil by Mike Bruner Red Clay 602 Late Model Series show of the season and David Smith’s victory continued the streak of no repeat series winners so far in 2025. Kenny Collins (Senoia Raceway), Jay Coen (Lavonia Speedway), Griffin Smith (Buckshot Speedway), Frankie Beard (Sugar Creek Raceway), Dawson Lowe (Lake View Motor Speedway), and Hayden Cardwell (I-75 Raceway) have also celebrated in victory lane with the tour this year.
After presiding over six races in as many weekends, the Red Clay Series will take a six week hiatus until returning to action on Tuesday, June 10 at Laurens County Speedway in Laurens, South Carolina. The 44th Annual ‘Shrine Race’ will be held on that Tuesday in the Palmetto State and a $2,000 winner’s check will be on the line for the 602 Late Models.
