Griffin Smith Awarded Red Clay 602 Late Model Series Victory at North Georgia Speedway
Ryan DelphThe fifteenth stop of the year for the Schaeffer's Oil by Mike Bruner Red Clay 602 Late Model Series was held on Friday night at North Georgia Speedway and it was Griffin Smith that inherited the victory after apparent winner Hayden Swaney was disqualified in post-race inspection for having the wrong rocker arms on his engine. Swaney, who had topped the speed chart in Knowles Race Parts and Bodies, LLC qualifying, led all 25 circuits of the main event at the Chatsworth, Georgia oval before failing post-race tech. Smith, who started from the outside of the front row beside Swaney, finished 1.144 seconds behind at the unfurling of the checkered flag prior to being awarded the win.
For Griffin Smith, the $2,500 triumph was his second of the year with the Red Clay 602 Late Model Series having also reached victory lane back on March 28 at Buckshot (AL) Speedway. Colton Berrong and fifth-starting Spencer Singleton rounded out the podium in second and third respectively. John Land started and finished fourth, while Eli Reece picked up a trio of spots to land in the fifth finishing position.
A total of 20 Schaeffer’s Oil by Mike Bruner Red Clay 602 Late Model Series competitors were on the grounds on Friday evening at North Georgia Speedway. Bryson Hickman was quick right off the trailer in posting the fastest lap in MRP Fantasy Racing Hot Laps, while Hayden Swaney went quickest in Knowles Race Parts and Bodies time trials with his lap of 14.492 seconds. The 25-lapper was slowed by four caution flags - each of which were for multi-car accidents on laps 1, 2, 16, and 18.
Next up on the racing calendar for the Red Clay 602 Late Model Series competitors will be a visit to the sprawling Wythe Raceway in Rural Retreat, Virginia on Saturday night, August 16. The series’ third stop of the year to the 1/2-mile speedplant boasts a $2,000 first place prize. David Smith and Kenny Peeples, Jr. have recorded victories at Wythe Raceway already in 2025 with the tour. More information on this show can be found online by clicking on www.WytheRaceway.com.
The Red Clay 602 Late Model Series tire rule for Wythe Raceway will be Left Front: Open, Right Front: American Racer Pro 2, Left Rear: American Racer Pro 2, Right Rear: American Racer Pro 2 or Pro 4. The entry fee will be $80.00 and transponders will be available to rent.
