Storm Damage to Racing Surface Forces North Georgia Speedway to Cancel August 15 Show
Ryan DelphIn the wake of the same storm that caused historic flooding to the nearby Chattanooga area, North Georgia Speedway received enough rain and damage to the racing surface this week that series and track officials have been forced to cancel Friday’s Schaeffer’s Oil by Mike Bruner Red Clay 602 Late Model Series program. The extra purse money that was added for the 602 Late Model event on August 15 will be moved to the next Red Clay 602 Late Model Series show at the Chatsworth, Georgia oval on September 6. The next event at North Georgia Speedway will be on Saturday, August 23, as the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series rolls into town to preside over a $15,000 to win Super Late Model shootout.
“I’m sorry and hate to have to cancel this event,” quoted Ray Cook earlier this afternoon. “All of the rain from that huge storm on Tuesday night washed the track away substantially. I was there at North Georgia Speedway yesterday (Wednesday) and an hour into working on the surface, here came another big storm. The track is still extremely wet from the rain they received last night and there just isn’t enough time to fix the washed out surface by hot laps on Friday night. It’s unfortunate, but there is nothing you can do about Mother Nature and our prayers go out to all in the area that have been affected by the massive flooding.”
